Ajitoya

Just when you thought you knew everything there is to know about Japanese style curry, here comes Ajitoya to stir things up! Stir the curry pot, that is. Ajitoya took a risk and has brought a new perspective on how curry should be, and I got to say, it’s pretty awesome.

The restaurant itself has a surf shop style atmosphere, wood and wicker style seating, and a fine view of Araha beach. Seats and tables are plentiful but when we went there to eat at lunch time, whatd’ya know, it was packed. A good sign, I guess. After you’ve tasted the food, you will see the wait was totally worth it.

They have many different types of curries but they split into two general categories: Soup and Keema. For me, the Keema was the clear winner. Usually, when you say curry, you think of spicy or hot but in Ajitoya’s case, the curry was rather sweet. I should have figured as the restaurant does say “Okinawan Brown Sugar” on its banner. As I continued to eat to decide how I feel about the taste, before I knew it, I was on to my second plate! The sweetness of the curry balances out the spicy and the two flavours harmoniously complement each other. And did I mention the toppings? Chicken, cabbage, eringi mushrooms, carrots, bell pepper, and half a boiled egg. Is this curry or a ramen? Not that I am complaining. It’s all delicious. I particularly like the additional topping of bacon and Okinawa pork sausage (what a shocker, I love meat!). They also have a “topping of the day” which I think is the chef’s way of experimenting new flavours to include in future menus. To go with the atmosphere, they also have a few cocktail shakes, beers, and other tropical drinks to set the mood.

The restaurant keeps the price light at around 900 to 1,200 yen per curry dish. Each dish already comes with rice so that’s really all you need. Perfect for a reasonable eat. Ajitoya has three branches with their most convenient one being in Chatan. To get there, exit the commissary gate of Camp Foster and turn right on route 58. Keep straight for about 600 meters and turn left on the first light. Keep straight towards the beach and turn right on the tee. Ajitoya will be on the left side soon after the turn.
