Olive Oil. Perhaps this humble ingredient isn’t something you give much consideration to on your routine shopping trip, however, a trip to Shalimar might just turn you into an oil aficionado.

Tucked away on the second floor of “House of 66 Cents” in Ginowan City, Shalimar is small but impressively stocked. You will be greeted warmly by its owners, and are free to browse its wares. If you don’t know much about olive oil, prepare to be impressed. There are a lot of varieties, all sourced from Italy, and many of which you can sample upon request. The owners speak fluent Japanese and English (as well as Italian), and hold a wealth of knowledge on the products. Also available for purchase is balsamic vinegar, which goes great mixed with olive oil, and is perfect as a dip for bread, as well as gift items such as bags made from fabrics sourced downstairs, and some products made from the oil they stock.

Price varies depending on the oil you wish to purchase. Bear in mind this is a speciality shop, and all items are imported, so if you are looking for cheap, this isn’t the place for you. However, you do get what you pay for, which is high quality oils and expert help on how best to utilize them. There are even recipe cards (in Japanese) available for customers to take, to help inspire that first dish!

Shalimar is open Monday to Sunday 10am to 7pm. There is some parking available at the side of the building, and access to the store is through “House of 66 Cents” and up the flight of stairs. Sadly there is no disabled or stroller access. Payment is accepted in dollar, yen, and card.
