To be honest, I had no idea what a poke bowl was before moving to Okinawa, then I discovered 808 Poke Bowls, a poke speciality cafe in Onna village and have since become a huge fan of this tasty Hawaiian meal!

Poke refers to a seafood dish made by cutting fresh fish into cubes. Customers can choose between freshly-caught Okinawan tuna, fresh salmon or fresh octopus. There are several types of flavoured sauce – all delicious – including Hawaiian, miso and shoyu. Regular toppings such as green onion, sesame and Japanese rice seasoning are included in the price but I would totally recommend adding more! My personal favourites are cucumber and avocado – yum. This is all served on a generous portion of rice to give a healthy delicious meal, bursting with a uniquely Hawaiian flavour. Another option on the menu is the superfood, super trendy, super insta-worthy açai bowl topped with granola and fruit and is of course delicious. The shop front, painted green and adorned with palm trees and the interior filled with simple Hawaiian decor create such a chilled vibe and the staff are so friendly and welcoming. Prices can get a little steep once extras are added but we all need to treat ourselves, right?

And the best thing about this place? They offer take-out. Order your perfectly customised bowl of deliciousness to go and the staff will happily package it up for you to savour at one of the beautiful beaches nearby. Sitting on a dreamy Okinawan beach eating an 808 poke bowl – perfection!
